chapter 01
Violet set Luna on the ground and carefully took the box from her mother, delicately holding it as if it were her Grandmother herself. Luna rubbed her head on their legs, doing figure-eight circles around them.
“Open it,” said Violet’s mom.
Violet pushed back the cover and saw a dusty old book and some trinkets in a sash bag.
“Looks like Ralph would hate it—trinkets, knick-knacks, and books,” said Violet, chuckling.
Violet’s mom laughed in unison, “Yes, that he would, which is why you must keep the contents of this box safe.”
chapter 02
Violet read aloud:
In a dire time, the realm’s fate is sealed,
An alchemist soon to be revealed.
The planets align, all seven in the path,
A dangerous force unleashed its wrath.
But soon, dark will come to light,
All creatures and beings will see with sight.
A hidden path not yet known,
The alchemist will weave what’s sewn.
A guiding light of spirits, too,
All words and secrets lead back to you.
The time has come to heal all that’s broken,
These magic words will soon be spoken.
A shadow mist will fall upon,
The alchemist transforms at dawn.
The power-hungry in despair,
Will grasp upon the crown from your hair.
And nothing’s lost, for all’s transformed,
But there’s still danger, so be forewarned…
And rising from the sands of past,
A race to unite the realm at last.
chapter 3
Violet’s heart pounded in her chest and her eyes widened in disbelief as she turned to look at the clock. The digital clock started moving—at furious speed, and the numbers quickly changed from one to the next.
6:54…
8:22…
7:45…
2:22…
3:33…
4:44…
The clock had never done that before! She watched in horror and amazement as the clock continued changing. Until it stopped completely at 12:12. The realization hit her like a ton of bricks—something was very, very wrong.
“Luna,” Violet called for her cat, but Luna didn’t respond. Violet walked over to Luna, still curled up in a tight ball. Nervously, she reached down to pet her, which would typically result in headbutts and purrs, but this time, nothing. “Luna!” Violet put her ear up to Luna’s chest; she could hear her heartbeat and was warm to the touch, but it was as if she was frozen in time.
chapter 4
“Begin where you are and take that first step.
There is no better place you can start.
Go forward, my child.
You must make a choice.
Pick the route that most speaks to your heart,” said a voice.
“Who said that?” Violet shouted, her voice bouncing through
the trees. She wondered if the fluttering creature had returned.
“I’m the keeper of realms, I watch from up high.
Worry not; we’ll meet in the blink of an eye.”
Trees don’t talk, and words don’t come from the sky—what is this place?
Violet wondered if she had gone crazy. She shuddered and looked over her shoulder, searching the sky for any signs of animals or people, but found none. But she felt a bit comforted to know that she wasn’t completely alone in this odd place.
chapter 5
“Violet, our fears, just like our flaws, are our gifts; they allow us to find our strengths hidden deep within us,” her mom’s voice echoed in her mind. She was always saying stuff like that. Violet missed her now more than ever, but she knew she had to be brave—for herself and for her mom. She had to make everything right again.
Violet still wasn’t too fond of spiders, but then she remembered how innocent the little spider looked when she found it sitting on the toad’s back last night. “They’re just little things; they can’t hurt me,” Violet told herself. Afraid but determined to set things right, she tiptoed further inside the cave. The stench grew more pungent, filling her nostrils with its horrible odor. The air became so thick that it made it difficult for her to breathe.
DRIP! DRIP! DRIP!
A slimy substance dripped overhead and landed on the cave floor with a squelch. The combination of the foul smell and the repulsive stickiness made her nauseous.
She turned around to look back at the cave opening. She could swear she had only taken a few small steps, but had found herself deep inside the cave now.
chapter 10
“He, who is he?” Violet delicately squeaked out, like a mouse caught in an inescapable trap.
“That is the wrong question, Violet,” said the voice, moving through the cellar room. Violet could make out the shadow form, but could not see his face.
“Wait . . . how do you know my—”
“Name?” interrupted the dark voice. “Also, the wrong question.”
“Why . . . then . . . why am I here?” asked Violet, hoping for advice, even if it had to come from this shadow figure.
“Ahh, yes,” said the voice, stopping right before Violet.
Violet strained to see his face but still could not make out any features.
“I trust you enjoyed the telescope I sent you,” said the voice.
“The telescope?” repeated Violet. “You mean you’re my—” began Violet.
